Phil Robertson, the beloved patriarch of the Duck Dynasty family and founder of Duck Commander, has died at the age of 79. His daughter-in-law, Korie Robertson, announced his passing on May 25, sharing that he died peacefully following a private battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Robertson was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2024, a fact first made public by his son Jase Robertson during a December episode of the family’s podcast Unashamed. Although the family kept many details private, fans had noticed his absence from recent public appearances.
Phil rose to national fame in 2012 when Duck Dynasty premiered on A&E. The reality series followed the Robertson family and their duck call business in West Monroe, Louisiana. Viewers were drawn to their Christian faith, family-first values, and unapologetic Southern lifestyle. The show became a cultural phenomenon, running for 11 seasons before ending in 2017.
In a heartfelt tribute shared online, Korie wrote, “He lived exactly as he believed—unapologetically, faithfully, and with great love for his family. We’re heartbroken, but we rejoice in knowing he is finally whole and at peace.”
Though Duck Dynasty brought Robertson widespread popularity, his public life was not without controversy. In 2013, he made comments in an interview with GQ Magazine that were widely criticized as anti-LGBTQ+. A&E suspended him from the show briefly, but reinstated him just nine days later after a strong response from the show’s fanbase.
Despite the backlash, Robertson remained a central figure on the series and in the family’s business ventures. His strong Christian beliefs and vocal conservatism made him a polarizing figure, but also endeared him to a large and loyal audience.
In 2025, the Duck Dynasty legacy continues. A new spin-off titled Duck Dynasty: The Revival is set to premiere this summer on A&E. The show will center on Phil’s son Willie Robertson and daughter-in-law Korie, along with their children. Due to his declining health, Phil was not expected to appear in the new series.
Robertson’s impact extends far beyond television. As the founder of Duck Commander, he transformed a small duck call operation into a multi-million dollar business. He was also a former college football quarterback, a published author, and a father of four sons—Alan, Jase, Willie, and Jep—who have each carried on his legacy in their own ways.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Robertson, his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family has asked for privacy during this time and expressed gratitude for the continued support and prayers from fans around the country.
Phil Robertson’s life was one of faith, family, and enduring influence. While his passing marks the end of a chapter, his legacy will continue through his family, their business, and the countless lives they’ve touched through Duck Dynasty.
