Lyndon Byers Obituary: Canadian Former Ice Hockey Player Has Passed Away At 61

The hockey community is grieving the loss of Lyndon Byers, the former Boston Bruins enforcer whose grit, charisma, and devotion to his teammates made him an unforgettable figure in the NHL. Byers passed away at age 61. A cause of death was not shared publicly.

Born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Byers began his hockey journey with midget hockey at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox before joining the Regina Pats in 1981. Over three WHL seasons, he tallied 82 goals, 120 assists, and 476 penalty minutes in 185 games, helping lead the Pats to the league finals twice.

Boston selected Byers 39th overall in the 1982 NHL Draft. Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, he became known for his relentless, hard-nosed play. In 379 NHL games, he scored 28 goals, added 43 assists, and amassed a staggering 1,021 penalty minutes. According to HockeyFights.com, he fought 92 times in the NHL, embodying the role of a fearless protector.

“The Boston Bruins are deeply saddened by the passing of Lyndon Byers,” the team shared in a statement. “Lyndon was a fan favorite across his nine seasons in the Black & Gold thanks to his rugged style and was a key cog on the B’s teams that made trips to the Stanley Cup Final in 1988 and 1990.”

Byers’ wife, Anne, shared the news online: “It is with deep regret that I have to announce that LB passed away yesterday morning. Will and I are still working to process this news… we recognize how many people loved and cared for him and considered him a friend.”

Former Regina Pats broadcaster Kevin Gallant reflected, “He was a bubbly, infectious, larger-than-life guy. He was driven, and we knew he was going to make it to the NHL. So much fun to be around and a great defender of his teammates, which is what makes this loss so hard because he was such a popular guy.”

After his NHL career, which concluded with the San Jose Sharks in 1993, Byers remained a beloved figure in the hockey world and beyond. His fierce play, big heart, and humor will be remembered by all who knew him.
