Darren Scott Death, Obituary: South African Broadcaster Died at 54 of Cancer

Johannesburg, South Africa

Darren Scott, veteran South African radio and television presenter, died on Monday night at the age of 61 after a long and courageous fight against cancer.

With a broadcasting career that spanned more than four decades, Scott was a familiar and trusted voice across the country. His engaging style, warm personality, and deep knowledge of sports and music earned him a place in the hearts of countless listeners and viewers.

Scott began his career in the early 1980s at Capital Radio and quickly established himself as a standout talent in South African media. Over the years, he brought his signature wit and insight to stations such as 702, 5FM, East Coast Radio, Jacaranda 94.2, and Hot 91.9FM. Most recently, he hosted the “Just Plain Drive” show on HOT 102.7FM, where he remained a beloved presence behind the microphone.

His contributions extended beyond radio. On television, he gained national recognition as the host of Boots & All, a popular rugby show on SuperSport, where his deep passion for sport shone through. His voice became synonymous with major sporting moments, and his ability to connect with audiences earned him widespread admiration.

Darren Scott’s talent was matched by a long list of accolades. Over his career, he was nominated for more than 30 Liberty Radio Awards, winning 14—including Best Breakfast Presenter or Show in every year he was nominated. In 1997, he was named South African Sports Journalist of the Year. He also received the You Magazine Personality of the Year Award and two People Magazine Sports Presenter of the Year awards, cementing his place among the country’s top media figures.

Born in Johannesburg on January 6, 1964, Scott was diagnosed with melanoma nearly 40 years ago. His decades-long battle with the disease included several recurrences. After new tumors were discovered in recent years, Scott returned to South Africa from the United States for further treatment. A BackaBuddy campaign was launched to help fund his medical care, allowing supporters across the country to rally behind him.

His ex-wife, Sarah-Kate Accetta, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media following his death:
“It is with the heaviest, most shattered heart that I share… Darren has passed from this earth into the loving arms of Jesus,” she wrote. “Your generosity through the BackaBuddy campaign didn’t just fund treatment—it gave Darren hope. It gave him dignity. And it gave him the profound gift of feeling so loved.”

She also asked for prayers for their two sons, Mark and Matthew. “Their world has changed forever, and we need every bit of strength we can hold onto,” she added.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Darren Scott was also known for his philanthropy and his commitment to charitable causes, often using his platform to raise awareness and support for those in need.

His passing has left a profound void in the South African media landscape. Friends, fans, and colleagues alike remember him as a broadcaster who not only informed and entertained but inspired through his courage, humor, and humanity.

Darren Scott’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, both on and off the air. His voice may be silent, but his spirit, stories, and impact will endure.
