Trooper Mollie McClure, Minnesota State Patrol Officer Known for Service and Compassion, Dies at 28
ST. PAUL, MN — Trooper Mollie McClure, a Minnesota State Patrol officer remembered for her leadership, compassion, and quiet courage, died tragically on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in a drowning accident on Waubay Lake in northeastern South Dakota. She was 28.
Her body was recovered the following day. Authorities confirmed she was off duty at the time of the incident.
McClure joined the Minnesota State Patrol in October 2021 and served in the St. Cloud District. In just a few short years, she made an impact far beyond her assignment. From mentoring cadets at the State Patrol Academy to working on initiatives aimed at increasing the number of female troopers in the field, McClure brought heart, purpose, and determination to everything she did.
“The Minnesota State Patrol extends its heartfelt condolences to Trooper McClure’s family, friends, and fellow troopers during this profoundly difficult time,” the agency said in a public statement. “The agency stands united in support and honor of her memory.”
A Trooper Who Led With Integrity and Heart
Though early in her career, McClure quickly stood out for her commitment to service and her ability to lead by example. She played an active role in training new recruits, guiding them not only through the rigors of the job, but also through the deeper responsibilities of serving the public with integrity.
Her advocacy for women in law enforcement was more than symbolic—it was rooted in practical action. As a member of a statewide workgroup, McClure worked to ensure that women had greater opportunity and representation within the ranks of the patrol. Colleagues often described her as steady, focused, and quietly inspiring.
A Moment That Captured Her Spirit
In 2023, a roadside rescue earned McClure national attention when a video of her freeing a baby deer trapped in a wire fence went viral. The clip was short—less than a minute—but it spoke volumes about who she was: calm under pressure, deeply compassionate, and attuned to the needs of the vulnerable.
Though she never sought recognition, McClure’s actions reminded many of the human side of law enforcement. In a role that often calls for strength and resolve, she also carried kindness.
A Life of Quiet Strength
Born and raised in Minnesota, McClure brought a local’s understanding to her patrol work. She knew the roads she served. She knew the people. And she served with humility and pride.
She was deeply connected to her fellow officers and to her community. Her death has left a profound impact across the state and among first responders who worked closely with her.
McClure’s family has requested privacy as they grieve. No funeral details have been publicly announced at this time.
