Diogo Jota, 28, Portuguese Football Star and Liverpool Forward, Dies in Car Crash Alongside Brother
ZAMORA, SPAIN – Diogo Jota, the dynamic Liverpool and Portugal international footballer known for his humility, work ethic, and fierce determination on the pitch, has tragically died at the age of 28. His younger brother, Andre Silva, 26, also a professional footballer, died in the same accident.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, near Palacios de Sanabria, in northwestern Spain. According to the Guardia Civil, the Lamborghini carrying both brothers suffered a tyre blow-out while overtaking, veered off the A-52 Rías Bajas highway, and caught fire. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Jota’s sudden death has left a profound void in the football world and among those who knew him as a dedicated teammate, loving husband, and father of three.
From Gondomar to Global Recognition
Born in Massarelos, Portugal, in December 1996, Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, known professionally as Diogo Jota, rose from youth academies in Gondomar to the highest levels of world football. After early stints with Paços de Ferreira and a breakthrough at Wolverhampton Wanderers, he signed with Liverpool FC in September 2020 in a move that redefined his career.
Jota quickly earned admiration at Anfield, not just for his goal-scoring instincts but also for his consistency, discipline, and team-first mentality. He played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title win, and just weeks ago, he helped Portugal defeat Spain in the UEFA Nations League final, further cementing his place in Portuguese football history.
A Life Grounded in Love and Loyalty
Beyond the game, Jota was known for his humility and deep devotion to family. On June 22, 2025, just 10 days before his passing, he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony surrounded by close friends and loved ones. The couple shared three young children, who were often at the heart of his social media posts and personal joys.
Despite global fame, Jota never strayed far from his roots. Teammates, coaches, and fans often spoke of his quiet leadership, respect for others, and his ability to balance professional success with personal integrity.
His brother, Andre Silva, also pursued football at a professional level, playing for Penafiel, a club in Portugal’s second division. The brothers shared a deep bond, often training together during off-seasons and supporting each other’s careers.
Mourning a Star Lost Too Soon
Tributes have poured in from across the football community. Liverpool FC, in an official statement, expressed “deep sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family.” Teammates, fans, and international colleagues have honored Jota not just as a world-class footballer but as a “kind and selfless man who led with heart.”
Portuguese Prime Minister and President have both offered condolences, highlighting Jota’s role as a national icon who “represented Portugal with honor and humility.”
Remembering a Legacy That Transcends the Game
Diogo Jota’s legacy is not measured only in goals or medals—it is found in the lives he inspired. Whether sprinting down the left flank at Anfield, kneeling to embrace his children after a match, or encouraging young Portuguese talents, Jota led by example.
He leaves behind his wife Rute, their three children, extended family, teammates, and millions of admirers around the world. As the football world grieves, it also remembers—a player who loved the game, loved his people, and never stopped giving his all.
